Each of the state's culturally diverse regions nurture a rich variety of flora and fauna.
The dense forests of Meghalaya sustain an incredible bio diversity and provide a safe haven for a variety of animals, reptiles, bird and insect life. The Khasi hills are extremely rich in vegetation. Over 2000 flowering plants grow in the vicinity of Cherrapunji alone. Over 150 species of ferns and 250 species of wild orchids beside balsams, palms, and an abundance of lichen, mosses and fungi grow in the hillsides. Butterflies are in abundance with over 500 species having been noted. On the higher reaches hillsides are adorned with a variety of pine, oak and rich undergrowth.

Balpakram National Park
This is one of the two national parks in Meghalaya. Full of limestone and coal deposits on a hill that contain fossilized remains of sea shells its an exciting region for the geologist. Balpakram in the Garo hills is the home of large herd of wild elephants These hills also hold a sizeable population of tigers, leopards, bison, Hoolock gibbon, wild boars and diverse species of deer and apes while a number of poisonous and non-poisonous snakes and lizards comprising the reptile species. Among the rare animals facing extinction are Clouded Leopard, the Golden Cat, and the Slow Loris.

The Nokrek Biosphere and the Siju Caves
Spread over the Garo hills in the sub-Himalayan range this reserve is isolated and remote. With numerous limestone vases the biosphere is the only one of its type in the northeast region. Sustaining a delicate eco system, this reserve contains a number of wild plants and flowers and animals The unusual water filled cave of Siju stands near the Nophak Lake and is believed to be miles long.

Caving in the Meghalaya hills can be a very rewarding experience considering the caves here are some of the longest and deepest ones in South Asia. Caving as a sport has yet to take off in India the way trekking has.
