Meitei, Naga and Kuki Chin Mizo form a majority of the people and tribes living in Manipur.
All these communities have nurtured and stood by a rich culture and associated traditions coming down for centuries even as modern civilization makes inroads into this hill state. Their engrossing folk lore, myths, legends, dances, martial arts and native games are evidence of their culture and traditions. Exquisite handicrafts and handlooms which they produce are done in traditional designs and patterns resulting an increased market within the country and abroad.
The state's art and culture, is symbolized by its classical and folk dance forms which lean heavily on ancient scriptures and mythology for their dances. Religion is an important factor in the local people's lives influencing the entire states' culture evident in the numerous renowned temples dotting the countryside.
The game of Polo is said to have originated in Manipur centuries ago. Know locally as "Sagol-Kangjei" it was encouraged by the many kings who ruled the state. The Manipur Piny is said to be the best in the world even today being fleet and extremely responsive. Imphal even today hosts international tournaments where a number of international repute participate.
Another game that is tremendously popular among the local people is an unusual form of hockey called - "Mukna Kangjei" which translates as wrestling hockey.
