Craftsmanship has been natural to the Assamese from the earliest of times. Assam well known for and associated with cane and bamboo products does however produce a range of other products in clay, wood, gold, and bell metal. The skilled craftsmen whether they are traditional potters or wood carvers, carpenters , goldsmiths or jewellers , are extremely precise in their work turning out an amazing variety of handicrafts.
The traditional potter communities of Kumars and Hiras in existence for centuries use their nimble fingers to produce surprising masterpieces in the form of household utilities. Curiously, the Hiras do not use a potter's wheel. Skilled wood workers turn our intricate woodwork items from a wide variety of wood available in this forest rich state. Expert goldsmiths create elegant ear and nose rings, fine necklace s and other jewellery from gold and silver .
Cane and Bamboo intrinsic to the Assamese way of life, have been used skilfully by craftsmen to produce household furniture, utensils and musical instruments. These versatile materials are also used in the construction of houses. Brass and Bell metal are common to the Assamese being used to make kitchen utensils, sculptures, figures and other day to day items where again the skill and dexterousness of the Assamese people can be seen in full flair.
